This could be a favourite movie, television series, children’s book, cartoon, toy, fairy tale, era or anything that you really like. Once you’ve chosen a theme based on something you like start to picture the characters within it.

Not many people want to go and spend lots of money on a fancy dress costume, as chances are it will only get worn once, so it’s fairly important to choose a theme that is easy to make affordable costumes for.

It is possible to create an affordable costume by using your own clothes and a few items borrowed from friends or family or have a look round the charity shops for cheap items.

Alternatively search the internet for used second hand costumes or new costumes that haven’t been worn but that don’t cost the earth as there are lots of fabulous budget options out there.

• Make it Comfortable

The last thing you want to be at a party is uncomfortable so try your costume on beforehand and make sure it’s comfortable. Check out the movement available in your costume by dancing around at home as you might at a party.

It’s also advisable to check that you’re able to eat and drink comfortably in your costume as you’ll want to do this at a party~It’s a good idea to check that you can easily eat or drink as well as there’s nothing worse than getting to a party and realising you can’t}! If your costume has a mask or a headpiece as part of it make sure you can comfortably eat and drink while wearing it.

Find out where the party is being held and then decide how you’ll travel there and how warm will it be when you get there. That will also depend on the time of year so plan your costume according to the season.

A fancy dress party should be fun so you might as well make the run up to it fun as well. If you’re going to party as a couple you could wear costumes that match or if you’re going with a group of friends you could get together beforehand and plan coordinated outfits.

If you don’t know much about the chosen theme you could do some research by watching some movies or flicking through books and magazines to look at the pictures.

If you like being creative you could try creating your own costume and then try it on with your friends to get their opinions and any help you need for the finishing touches. It’s great fun to travel to a fancy dress party with your friends or family so invite them over beforehand and get ready together.

Accessories are probably the most important part of any fancy dress costume. An affordable costume will become an amazing costume and look like you’ve spent a lot more than you have with the help of a few accessories.

You can add accessories to any outfit to make it look incredible and different from anyone else.

Accessories can really make or break a fancy dress costume and the right ones will show you’ve paid attention to your character and really made an effort with your outfit. You can buy just about every accessory going on the internet so you can create a fantastic costume easily.
